From Mementos to Marketing: Addressing the influence of pop culture in advertising.

By: Chloe Clark

Since the birth of digital media, advertising has constantly evolved to reflect the times. From videos featuring popular celebrities to slogans with generational humor, advertising draws inspiration from trends that take over the internet. Pop culture has left a mark on the world of advertising and forever shapes the way brands connect with consumers.

One of the most well-known ways brands have used pop culture to impact advertising is through music. More recently, the app TikTok has increased the spread of new music across the globe. Brands have started using iconic songs in advertising videos to promote nostalgia within its community.

Certain songs that were once associated with a trend are being replaced by the unconscious thought of a brand. By tapping into familiar melodies, advertisers leverage the emotional connection people have with music to evoke specific feelings and memories associated with their products.

Similarly, pop culture references in visual elements have become a staple in advertising. Whether it’s incorporating popular memes, movie references or celebrity endorsements, brands strive to stay relevant by aligning themselves with what’s trending.

For example, Coca-Cola’s memorable “Share a Coke” campaign personalized their bottles with popular names, encouraging consumers to share their experiences on social media, thus leveraging the power of personalization that is connected to the company.

Pop culture is synonymous with trends, and smart advertisers know how to use that to their advantage. Staying attuned to cultural shifts allows brands to remain agile and responsive in their messaging. For instance, during major events like the Super Bowl or the Oscars, advertisers often create commercials that capitalize on the popularity surrounding these cultural moments.

In the ever-evolving landscape of advertising, pop culture remains a driving force behind brand messaging and consumer engagement. Whether through music, trends or nostalgia, advertisers continue to create meaningful connections with their target audiences through uprising trends. By staying engaged with media popularity, brands can position themselves as relevant, relatable and ultimately, unforgettable. As trends continue to evolve, one thing is certain: the fusion of pop culture and advertising will continue to shape the way we interact with brands for years to come.
