Hop into Tradition: Why Familiarity Wins in Easter Advertising

By Macy Penick

When you think of the Easter season, what is the first thing that pops into your brain? Bunnies? Eggs? Chocolate bunnies and eggs? Spring? Family and religious traditions? The Cross? An empty tomb? Finding the golden egg at your grandma’s house? Whatever your answer may be, Easter comes with many feelings of familiarity. It is a holiday where secular and religious traditions work together to bring joy and comfort. For brands, it is the perfect opportunity to shape specific marketing opportunities that tap into what we all know and love.

Brands that Hatch Brilliant Easter Advertising:

Cadbury

The Creme Egg is one of Easter’s most beloved candies. You might also remember their signature Easter Bunny commercial from childhood. In almost every store, you are met with a giant display of their delicious chocolates. Don’t even get me started about the Mini Eggs…

Reese’s

Reese’s is a classic. Who doesn’t love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter? Put them in the shape of an egg, and now somehow it is even better. This brand does a great job at bringing the classics to every holiday season, especially around Easter.

Lindt

The Easter Bunny probably brought you a Lindt golden bunny at some point. Or maybe it was the reward for finding the golden egg at your family’s egg hunt. Whatever it may be, these classic bunny-shaped chocolates are a fan favorite year after year.

Peeps

Whether you love them or hate them, Peeps are an Easter staple. They usually appear in their original chick shape, but also as bunnies around this time of year. And you can’t forget about their recognizable spring colors that will catch your eye in an aisle at a store.

No-bunny does it better than these brands that we all grew up with. The choices that they have made keep their customers coming back every Easter season. People are filled with the feeling of joy and the comfort of familiarity whenever these items hit the shelves.

Egg-sploring Easter Symbols and Traditions:

The Cross

The Cross is the ultimate symbol of sacrifice and hope. Easter weekend starts the Friday before Easter Sunday, which is also known as Good Friday. It symbolizes Christ Jesus’ death as a sacrifice for humanity’s sin. (Luke 23:26-56 ESV)

Empty Tomb

The empty tomb represents Jesus’ victory over death and is a powerful symbol of resurrection that brings hope. This ultimately is what Easter is all about! (John 20 ESV)

The Bunny

As a child, you may have been taken to the mall to have a picture taken with the Easter Bunny. Or maybe in the morning, you were greeted with a basket from him, filled with all of your favorite treats. You will probably see a bunny wherever you look this time of year. This has been a tradition for generations, and most likely won’t go anywhere.

The Egg

Easter egg decorating is an activity that many families and friends participate in each year. You will find many things shaped like eggs, as mentioned previously, that will instantly bring back memories. The deeper meaning of the egg is that the shell represents the sealed tomb, and cracking it open symbolizes the resurrection of Christ.

Easter Egg Hunting and Easter Baskets

Grab your basket and go outside… last one to find the golden egg is a rotten egg! Children and even adults find joy in hiding and finding each egg. The kids eagerly circle up to count how many they found and see what each one is filled with. There is a reason that this happens in homes every year.

Church Services and Family Gatherings

Many people associate Easter with church services, often followed by family gatherings. The message of Easter resonates with shared beliefs and emotions. These traditions are often looked forward to by families every year.

Whether you see these things as you enter the grocery store or as you walk through the aisles of Hobby Lobby, Easter is filled with iconic advertising choices made by brands, symbols and traditions. All of these things bring joy, comfort and familiarity to all who celebrate. As we enter into this holiday, remember the things that make it egg-stra special to you!
