More Than Marketing: How Brands Are Becoming Part of the College Experience

By: Reese Scarborough

College is often described as the best four years of your life. Between football games, social events and campus traditions, students are constantly making memories with their friends. For brands, these moments create opportunities to connect with students beyond traditional advertising. Instead of simply promoting a product, companies are finding ways to become part of the experiences students already enjoy.

Through campus pop-ups, student ambassadors, and immersive activations, brands like Red Bull and Poppi are finding creative ways to connect with college students and become part of campus culture.

Red Bull: An Early Adopter of Student-Led Marketing

Red Bull was an early adopter of student ambassador marketing, recognizing the value of connecting with college students through their own communities. Its’ Student Marketeer program puts students at the center of brand promotion through campus events, product sampling, and peer-to-peer interactions.

One advantage of student-led marketing is that students understand their campus communities. They know which events attract their peers and how to introduce a product in a way that feels natural. Instead of feeling like an advertisement, a brand interaction can become part of a conversation between friends or an activity at a campus event.

By building relationships through repeated interactions, Red Bull shows how brands can become a recognizable part of campus life. Its approach demonstrates that sometimes the best way to reach students is through other students.

Poppi: Turning Campus Traditions Into Brand Experiences

Poppi takes a creative approach to reaching college students through colorful branding, customized merchandise, and interactive campus experiences. From sorority events to pop-ups featuring celebrity appearances during its Major Flavor Tour, Poppi finds creative ways to become part of the experiences college students are excited about.

Poppi also connects with students through its College Ambassador Program, giving them opportunities to represent the brand through campus events, product promotion, and social media content. Like Red Bull, Poppi uses student involvement to connect with college communities, but its playful visual identity also makes its experiences especially shareable.

When students see creative displays, branded merchandise, or fun event setups, they have something to photograph and share with friends. This allows a campus activation to reach beyond the people who attended and gives students another reason to engage with the brand.

Why Campus Marketing Works

Campus marketing works because it meets students where they already spend their time. Football games, student organizations, and social events bring people together, creating opportunities for brands to connect with students in a more interactive way. Pop-ups, product sampling, and giveaways give students a reason to participate instead of simply scrolling past an advertisement.

Peer influence also plays a big role. College students often discover new products through friends, roommates, and social media. When someone enjoys a brand experience, they might share it online or recommend the product to their friends. A single event can turn into conversations and recommendations that continue long after it ends.

The key is creating experiences that feel like a natural part of campus life. Students are more likely to engage when a brand adds something fun or memorable to an event rather than making the experience feel like one big advertisement.

Making Marketing Part of the Experience

Ultimately, campus marketing is about more than getting a product into students’ hands. It is about creating experiences that give them a reason to connect with a brand. Whether through Red Bull’s student-led approach or Poppi’s creative campus activations, brands have opportunities to become part of the college experience.

College is full of moments students remember long after graduation. When brands become part of those moments, they have the chance to build connections that last beyond an event or interaction. The best marketing doesn’t always feel like marketing. Sometimes, it feels like just another great part of college.
