The Perfect Celebrity

By Sydney Goldsmith

To some, she’s the greatest to ever do it, business mogul, and wordsmith. To others, she is a fan on TV every Sunday. But to everyone, she is a name at the top of Instagram feeds, Billboard charts and concert t-shirts.

Taylor Swift is one of the world’s most discussed celebrities today. She has remained at the top of our collective consciousness for nearly 20 years, and yet her fame and fanbase is only becoming larger. She has had eight Billboard No. 1 albums since 2020, according to The New York Times. The data tracking service Luminate said in 2023, “One in every 78 songs streamed in the U.S. was by Swift”. This kind of dominance doesn’t happen on its own; it requires precision and planning.

Tree Paine serves as Taylor Swift’s longtime publicist, managing the singer’s media relations and public image. Paine took on Taylor as her one and only client around 2014. Since then, they have worked on advertising and public relations campaigns that have transformed Swift’s career and public image to be what it is today. Guiding the star through scandals such as the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West drama and the battle of owning her masters, Paine must balance the pressure of keeping Taylor on the tip of our tongues but distant enough to long for. Nowhere was this delicate balancing act more evident than during the rollout of Swift’s Eras Tour.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was a 52-date billion-dollar stadium tour that ranged from 2022 to 2024. After this long run of weekly appearances and performances, the star had taken a break from the big stage. This led to a more quiet summer for Taylor Swift resulting in less public appearances and headlines with her name in them. Could this moment of quiet be the key to Swift’s marketing success? Could the secret to what makes the Swift machine run lay in the moments when the buzz has run out?

Knowing when to draw the curtains and close the laptop for your client can be the secret to keeping their audience wanting more. Paine may have known this, or it could be that Taylor was just ready for a break? Either way, the world is definitely thirsting for more, already. Even with the Era’s Tour in our very near rearview mirror.

The key to Swift’s success is a complex question that is pondered by music journalists, business professionals, and probably, her haters. However, some truth could be said about the way that a celebrity’s career can be sustained by knowing when to stop.
